EV Charger Quote Checker
Have two or three EV charger quotes with different totals? Enter the written prices and included work below to see what is missing from each proposal. For example, a quote excluding the charger and permit cannot be compared directly with one including both. The Level 2 installation cost guide explains the cost categories.

How to compare EV charger quotes
Compare a common scope before comparing prices: circuit work, permits, charger equipment, labor, materials, excavation and restoration. A low total with unspecified exclusions may be hard to compare with an itemized proposal.
Calculation method and example
Nominal charging power = current × voltage ÷ 1,000. A 32 A charger at 240 V is 7.68 kW. Applying a 125% continuous-load illustration gives 40 A. DOE’s federal fleet guidance explains this relationship. Confirm the actual adopted NEC edition (for example, the 2023 edition where adopted), applicable Article 625 provisions and local amendments with the authority having jurisdiction. This calculator does not select conductors or certify compliance.
Does a 100 A service always need an upgrade?
No automatic conclusion is possible. Existing household loads, the load calculation, equipment and local requirements matter. Ask about approved load management and suitable charging current.
Can I treat the cheapest quote as savings?
Only after the scopes and exclusions are comparable. This tool reports a price difference, not guaranteed savings.
Why ask about load management?
Appropriate controls may limit EV charging demand. The electrician and local authority must confirm equipment suitability and acceptance.
Is a longer cable route automatically a panel upgrade?
No. Routing, trenching and voltage drop are separate design considerations. Distance does not determine service capacity.

Compare EV installation quotes on the same scope
The EV Charger Quote Checker above compares up to three proposals. Use it before choosing an installer to identify unanswered scope questions. It does not estimate a fair market price or decide whether your service needs an upgrade.
What to enter and why it matters
- Existing service: use the confirmed service rating or select Unknown. The main-breaker number alone does not measure spare capacity.
- Current and voltage: enter the proposed charging setting and nominal supply voltage. A 48A-capable charger may be commissioned at a lower current; compare the installed settings.
- Location and distance: describe the mounting area and one-way wiring route. Outdoor ratings, trenching, difficult access and restoration can change scope. This tool does not price those conditions.
- Total and proposed work: enter each written total and distinguish a new circuit, panel upgrade and load management.
- Included items: mark permits, materials, labor, trenching and equipment exactly as stated. Unknown means you need clarification; it does not mean free.
40A versus 48A: charging current is not circuit rating
At 240V, 40A is 9.6 kW and 48A is 11.52 kW of nominal input power. The usual 125% continuous-load illustration is a 50A circuit for 40A charging and a 60A circuit for 48A charging. A 40A circuit is not the same as 40A charging. A common 50A receptacle installation is not a route to 48A charging; follow the specific equipment instructions and hardwiring requirements. Actual charging also depends on the vehicle’s onboard charger.
These figures explain quote terminology. They do not select breaker, wire size or protection. A qualified electrician must verify the locally adopted code, conductor and terminal ratings, wiring method and manufacturer instructions.
Two illustrative quotes, two different scopes
| Item | Quote A | Quote B |
|---|---|---|
| Total | $1,800 | $5,000 |
| Charging setting | 32A at 240V | 32A at 240V |
| Proposed work | New circuit; 25-foot route | Panel/service work plus circuit |
| Clarify | Permit, charger and restoration included? | Load calculation, utility work and inspection included? |
The displayed $3,200 difference is a gap between totals. It is not verified savings. Ask why Quote B needs an upgrade and whether Quote A includes an equally complete installation. Also request a separately itemized load-management alternative where suitable.
Why panel upgrade costs vary
Replacing a panel with the same service rating differs from increasing service capacity. Costs can involve the meter enclosure, service conductors, grounding and bonding, utility coordination, trenching, permits and repairs to finished surfaces. Existing damage or obsolete equipment can require work even when a load calculation permits EV charging. Read the electrical panel upgrade guide alongside the written assessment.
More questions before you hire
Does the checker tell me whether $5,000 is too expensive?
No. It compares the totals and disclosed inclusions. Obtain local, itemized proposals for the same work; no national price threshold proves a quote is excessive.
Should I always pay extra for 48A charging?
Compare daily energy needs, available overnight charging time and the vehicle’s AC limit. A lower current may be adequate. Review service capacity and load-management options with your installer before selecting a setting.
Limitations and next steps
No site survey, utility approval, conductor sizing, permit determination or rebate eligibility check is performed. Keep the written proposals and ask the installer to explain every exclusion. For charging operating costs, use the U.S. Electricity Cost Calculator. Browse all free calculators.
