A smart plug with energy monitoring can help reduce electricity costs, but the plug itself does not magically save energy.
Its real value is much simpler: it shows you where electricity is being used, how much a device costs to run, and when that power is being wasted.
For some appliances, the savings may be only a few dollars per year. For others, discovering unnecessary operating hours or unexpected standby consumption can make the device surprisingly useful.
So before buying one, the better question is not simply “Does a smart plug save electricity?”
It is:
“What can I learn from measuring the electricity use of this device?”
What Does Smart Plug Energy Monitoring Actually Measure?
Not every smart plug measures electricity.
Some smart plugs only provide remote ON/OFF control, timers, schedules, or voice control. Models specifically equipped with energy monitoring can also track information such as:
- Real-time power consumption in watts (W)
- Accumulated energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh)
- Daily or monthly energy history
- Estimated electricity cost
- Usage patterns over time
For example, current TP-Link energy-monitoring models can display real-time power, historical consumption and estimated electricity bills after the electricity rate is entered into the app.
This means you can stop guessing how much electricity a device uses and begin measuring it.
Does a Smart Plug Really Save Electricity?
Not by simply plugging it in.
A smart plug actually consumes a small amount of electricity itself because its electronics and wireless connection must remain active.
The savings come from what you do with the information.
For example, you may discover that:
- A device consumes more standby power than expected.
- A home-office setup remains powered overnight.
- A fan, humidifier or other suitable appliance runs several hours longer than necessary.
- An older appliance uses considerably more electricity than expected.
- A device can safely be scheduled to switch off during unused hours.
Standby power is real electricity consumption. The U.S. Department of Energy defines it as electricity consumed while equipment is plugged in but operating in a low-power or inactive mode.
That is where energy monitoring becomes useful: measurement first, savings second.
How Much Money Can Smart Plug Energy Monitoring Save?
The answer depends entirely on the device you measure and your electricity rate.
A simple estimate is:
Electricity Cost = Power (kW) × Operating Hours × Electricity Rate
For example, imagine a device draws 5 watts in standby for 20 hours every day.
5 W = 0.005 kW
0.005 × 20 hours × 365 days = 36.5 kWh per year
If electricity costs $0.18 per kWh:
36.5 × $0.18 = $6.57 per year
Turning off that single device would not dramatically change your electricity bill.
But if several devices around the home have similar unnecessary loads, the numbers begin to add up.
This is why I think a smart plug is more useful as an energy detective than as an energy-saving device by itself.
Smart Plug Energy Monitoring for Standby Power
One of the easiest things to investigate is standby electricity use.
Televisions, computer equipment, chargers, entertainment systems and other electronics may continue drawing power even when they appear inactive.
Government energy guidance also recommends smart plugs and smart power strips as tools that can help automate devices and reduce unnecessary standby consumption.
But there is an important point:
Do not assume every standby device should simply be disconnected.
Some equipment needs continuous power for memory, communication, updates or its normal operating cycle.
The goal is to identify unnecessary consumption rather than blindly switching everything off.
Is Smart Plug Energy Monitoring Worth It?
For me, the answer depends on what you want to measure.
A smart plug with energy monitoring makes the most sense when you have a specific question:
How much does my computer setup cost to run?
Is this appliance using electricity while I am not using it?
How many kWh does this device consume in a month?
Would changing its operating schedule actually save money?
That is much more useful than buying several smart plugs and expecting your electricity bill to fall automatically.
I would start with one energy-monitoring smart plug, move it between suitable appliances, and collect real usage data.
Once you know which devices matter, you can decide where permanent automation is actually worthwhile.
Smart Plug vs Home Energy Monitor: Which Is Better?
A smart plug is designed to monitor an individual plug-in device.
A home energy monitor is intended to provide a broader picture of electricity use across a home or electrical system.
So the better choice depends on the question.
If you want to know:
“How much electricity does this TV, desktop computer or other plug-in appliance use?”
a smart plug can be a simple solution.
If you want to understand:
“Where is electricity being used throughout my entire home?”
a whole-home monitoring system may provide more useful information.
This is also why smart plugs work well as an inexpensive first step into home energy monitoring.
Check the Electrical Rating Before Using a Smart Plug
There is one part I would never ignore: electrical capacity.
A smart plug is still an electrical device installed between an outlet and an appliance.
Always check the rated voltage, current and power of the specific smart plug and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the connected appliance.
This becomes especially important with high-power heating equipment, motors, compressors and other large loads.
Do not assume that because an appliance physically fits into a smart plug, it is automatically appropriate to use it that way.
Energy monitoring is useful.
Electrical safety comes first.
My Practical View
From my perspective as an electrical construction engineer, the most interesting part of a smart plug is not remote control.
It is measurement.
People often try to reduce their electricity bill without knowing which devices are actually responsible for their consumption. They may turn off lights more often or unplug chargers, while a different appliance may be using far more electricity over the course of a month.
I think measuring first makes more sense.
A smart plug will not solve every energy problem, and it cannot replace a proper whole-home energy analysis. But for an ordinary household, it is an inexpensive way to turn an invisible electrical load into a number that can actually be understood.
Once you can see the watts and kWh, you can decide whether changing your behavior is really worth it.
So, How Much Can You Really Save?
There is no single percentage that applies to every home.
A smart plug may save almost nothing if the connected appliance already uses very little standby power and is operated efficiently.
On the other hand, it may help uncover a device that runs unnecessarily for hours every day.
That is why smart plug energy monitoring is most useful as a measurement tool first and an automation tool second.
Measure the device.
Calculate its electricity cost.
Then decide whether scheduling, switching it off, replacing it or simply leaving it alone makes the most sense.
Sometimes the best energy-saving decision is not turning something off.
It is finally knowing what is actually using the electricity.
